Level 2 vs Level 3 – Which Fitness Course Is Right for You?

Do I Need Level 2 Before Level 3?

Level 2 is the accepted entry point into the fitness industry and covers the foundational knowledge that Level 3 builds upon. Most learners complete Level 2 first, either separately or as part of the Complete Package. The Complete Package is the most cost-effective way to gain both qualifications together.

Can I Work as a Personal Trainer with Just Level 2?

A Level 2 qualification allows you to work as a fitness instructor — for example, leading gym floor sessions or group classes. To work as a personal trainer delivering 1-to-1 programmes, most employers and professional insurance providers require a minimum of Level 3. If your goal is personal training, Level 3 is the qualification you need.

Which Route Is Right for Me?

  • Choose Level 2 if you're new to the fitness industry and want to gain your first qualification, or if you're exploring whether a fitness career is right for you.
  • Choose Level 3 if you already hold a Level 2 (or equivalent) and are ready to qualify as a personal trainer.
  • Choose the Complete Package if you want to achieve both qualifications in one streamlined, best-value programme — including the Level 3 Exercise Referral qualification for working with specialist populations.
